right now. a police chase that ended with the dramatic car crash in oakland just a few hours ago. six people rushed to the hospital as we just got word that one of the passengers, they have died. ktvu alex savage is live for us, including the man hunt underway right now. alex? >> reporter: police at this point are looking for the driver of the suv, but i also want to tell you here that the sergeant on scene, they have confirmed toney a 19-year-old man was killed in this crash here. he was a passenger inside this stolen suv you're looking at right now. it was being chased this morning by chp officers. the suv was packed with eight people inside, coming down this hill when the driver lost control and slammed into a tree. here was the scene around 3:30 this morning here on the drive in oakland. paramedics transported six passengers with various injuries. one of them later died. the pursue all began when police tried topping this suv when the driver of the suv took off. chp officers picked up the pursuit on the freeway in oakland. it's unclear if alcohol was involved here, but the sergean

safety. he a flight risk. it took multiple agencies including the u.s. marshals to find him in oakland and bring him back here to san francisco. >> dan: an investigation is now underway into a fiery crash that killed a big rig driver and snarled the morning commute. chp says the big rig collided with a pickup truck on highway 37 at highway 29 in vallejo about 6:40 this morning. it landed on a grassy area below and burst into flames. they pulled the driver from the wreckage but sadly he died later at the hospital. he is identified as 43-year-old william ballard of roseville. the driver of the pickup was not hurt. >> was we show you the damage of a school bus suffered as it was rear-ended by a big rig. there was only one student aboard at the time. neither were hurt. it did shut down the highway for a time so tow trucks could move both of these oversized vehicles out of way. >> the pilot of the it on tank they're smashed into the bay bridge has passed his drug test. it hit the protective bumperer on the bridge at a time of low visibility. they may adopt a new safety plan for the bridge a

, oakland police say they are holding a news conference to talk about two recent shootings that injured police officers. police say a 13-year-old veteran was shot and wounded by a suspect during a foot chase in the fruitvale district on friday. five days earlier, on january 21st, an undercover police officer was shot and wounded while working on seminary avenue. full recoveries are expected for both officers. >>> the super bowl found 49ers are already in the big easy this morning. fans waved 49er faithful fashion as the team took off for new orleans yesterday at noon. five hours later, they touched down in new orleans for a week of practice before the game. the odds are on the niners' side. they are favored to beat the ravens. san francisco has been to the super bowl five times and they've won each game. the last one in 1995. 49ers have settled in at their new headquarters in downtown new orleans. fans greeted the players and took pictures with them in front of large banners. today, the team will begin weight lifting, practice and team meetings and we have our own team in new orleans. t

. >>> oakland police have arrested five men in the shooting of an oakland police officer. the shooting happened about 6:00 yesterday evening in the 1700 clock of seminary avenue. an undercover officer was on a stake-out. police say a group of armed and dangerous men approached the officer and shot him in the arm. he was unable to return fire. the shooting prompted a manhunt by a s.w.a.t. team, officers from other agencies and the c.h.p. the search uncovered several weapons and resulted in those arrests. two of the suspects are known gang members. >> i think any time we have subjects who are willing to confront the police and pull a trigger on an officer, i think we have to take that very seriously. >> police aren't releasing the names of the men arrested. they say they are following up on search warrants and looking for additional suspects. >>> but it is decision day in oakland. in about an hour, the city council is going to vote on whether to fire former l.a. and new york police chief william bratton as a consultant. cbs 5 reporter joe vasque
